A spooky and gripping mystery for readers aged 12+

Older readers will be enthralled by The Tall Man by Mary Cathleen Brown, which comes with an accompanying activity pack, which we created for Parrot Street Book Club subscribers in September 2024.

“We were gripped by this atmospheric, time-slip ghost story. With an intriguing premise, a brilliant cast of contemporary and historical characters and a impressively vivid setting, this is perfect Halloween reading."
~Sarah

The village is alive with rumours about the Tall Man and Tom lives in his house. Tom hears a boy in the cellar offering a 'special' acorn to a rat, Captain Rat, whom he begs to find the key to his leg-iron. The cellar is empty but Tom knows that the boy is real and he's convinced that he is trapped in a brutal past and the Tall Man's prisoner. Each time Tom tries to help the boy, the Tall Man's ghostly presence intensifies. Who is the boy in the cellar and can they escape Tall Man?

Mary Cathleen Brown gained a first- class degree in Creative Writing from Birkbeck College, where she received the Michael Donaghy Poetry prize. She comes from Ireland but has lived much of her life in Mexico. She now lives in London.

The activity pack includes stickers, book club-style questions to ponder and a welcome note from Mary Cathleen Brown. There’s also an astronomy-inspired word puzzle to solve and a recipe for currant buns to enjoy, alongside jokes and further reading recommendations.

Activity packs are a handy A5 size and printed on uncoated paper which is fully recyclable.

Scary Time Twister

SCARY TIME TWISTER
This is a scary story and it's full of mystery, because you don't know if Tom is seeing a ghost, or if he's imagining things, or if time has got twisted, but in the end you know time got twisted and that’s the most intriguing of all. Once I got into this story, I didn’t want to stop reading, even though there were some quite sad bits about Tom’s mum. In the middle, Tom had so many problems I didn’t know how he was ever going to sort them all out. I thought he was very brave and he turned out to be super ingenius, but I won’t say how or it will give too much away. I liked Vicky too, because she got angry but was forgiving and very adventurous. The three bad bullies at school made me laugh in the end. But here’s a warning: there are one or two parts where it’s so scary IT’S A SHOCK!
Nearly my favourite characters were Benjie, the cellar boy, and his Captain Rat. Captain Rat, I want you for my rat, you are so clever and loyal, and I really nearly cried for you. I soooo wanted Benjie to survive. Even though he’s been locked up for ages, he’s full of life. I wish there was more about what happened to him. I really really hope Mary Cathleen Brown will write another story about everything that happened to Benjie. Maybe she could write a story where Vicky gets a time twist and it’s about all that happened next to Benjie???
I really liked the activity pack that came with the book especially the astronomy puzzle in it because it made me look up the word Supernova and Hypergalaxy and the pictures are amazing, so I understand why Tom wants to be an astronomer. The pack had some good ideas for what to think about, especially what the future holds for Tom. I think he’ll go far, very far – as far as Mars?? But I hope he comes back, because I might want to marry him!
This book is really different, it’s exciting, it makes you wonder about time twisting, it’s full of colourful characters, a few mean ones, a really scary one, three or four people you love and really really want things to go right for, and a brilliant ending - I loved it!

PS: my dad says what I wrote might be too long, but if it is too long you can just use the last paragraph. Thank you!
