We were completely swept away by Here to Slay by Radhika Sanghani - perfect for early teen readers and an easy pick for our Macaw subscribers this month! It's an action-packed queer fantasy drama with a brilliant, diverse and hugely relatable cast of characters, plus romance, humour, magic and action all in equal measure. Here Radhika tells us about being inspired by the real goddess Kali and which other contemporary fantasy novels for teens she recommends you read next.

What inspired you to write Here to Slay?

The idea just came to me! And then I did a bit of research into the real goddess Kali – the Hindu goddess of death and destruction – and realised her origin story was the perfect myth for my book! It turns out she really was created to defeat a demon who cloned himself every time a drop of his blood touched the ground.

From there, I thought about periods, teen girls and the idea that anyone named after Kali would have to follow in her footsteps!!

What do you think is the most important message Kali learns?

The importance of being herself. Kali feels different and thinks that the only way to belong is to fit in. But slowly she learns that by being herself in every single way – and not trying to change herself to fit in – she’ll find her place in the world.

Which character was the most fun to write and why?

Normally I love writing mean characters, but here, I think I just loved writing Kali! She’s so awkward, and honest and because I wrote it in the first person, we get a real insight into her every thought.

Can you tell us anything about what the future holds for Kali?

I imagine that Kali and K will be very happy together – until some new demons appear…

What do you hope young readers will take away from the story and how it unfolds?

I hope readers firstly have fun reading it! And that also they understand that message of authenticity and really owning who we are.

Why did you choose to write books for this age group?

I think because I loved reading books as a teenager and they meant so much to me. I love being able to create stories for the teens of today, and maybe even inspire them in some way.

Do you have a favourite place to write?

Anywhere cosy with a cup of tea!

Which other contemporary fantasy novels for tweens and teens would you recommend our subscribers read next?

Lex Croucher’s books are really funny, so maybe start there!!
